Government or God?

What to do, as a follower of Christ, in an old democracy during an election.

Hey everyone! Unless you have been disconnected from the internet, TV, newspaper, radio or potentially smoke signals, then you know there is an election coming up in the United States for the most powerful position on this side of the planet: President of the United States. That is not to say there are not other officials who will be elected as well, but the presidential election definitely overshadows most other positions in the elections.

In this article I want to explore what grace and truth the Bible has to offer on the subject of politics, leaders in positions of power and how we as Christ followers should approach each and every election.

Before we get into that though, please give this article a like and follow our blog for more great content like this. We also have links to our Facebook and Twitter at the bottom of this article if you want to follow us there. We are going through a bit of a redesign currently, so we apologize if things look messy or out of place. Also, we are currently working on a new logo! Super excited to reveal that once it is here. With all that said, let’s dive in!

Who is your savior?

With all of the political unrest revolving around Covid-19 currently and the controversy of which political party is “best” suited to “fix” things, it brings an important question to the forefront of my mind: Who am I relying on to save me from any of this?

Please do not misunderstand this question as me believing that God WILL protect me from harm because I believe in Him. I am fully aware that God could use me however He pleases. Just check out Romans 12:1-2.

12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Are we offering ourselves as living sacrifices? Are we conforming to the patterns of this world? It says it right in the verse that if we are doing these things, we will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and PERFECT will. I don’t know about you guys, but for a few years now, I have truly struggled to see what God’s good, pleasing and perfect will is, except in one thing.

God’s good, pleasing and perfect will is to bring glory to himself. He deserves every bit of it and more! As time marches on, there is no doubt that at some point God will come back and every knee will bow and tongue confess that He is Lord. Take a look at Romans 14:11.

It is written:

“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,
‘every knee will bow before me;
    every tongue will acknowledge God.’”[a]

This brings me to the point of this section. Who do you call your savior? Is it God? Is it a man in a white house? Is it your congressman or congresswoman? At some point, none of these figure heads will matter any longer because God will rule supreme over all the earth. Until that day though, I can tell you that my trust is NOT in the likes of any human. Check out Jeremiah 17:5-9.

This is what the Lord says:

“Cursed is the one who trusts in man,
    who draws strength from mere flesh
    and whose heart turns away from the Lord.
That person will be like a bush in the wastelands;
    they will not see prosperity when it comes.
They will dwell in the parched places of the desert,
    in a salt land where no one lives.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
    whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
    that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
    its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
    and never fails to bear fruit.”

The heart is deceitful above all things
    and beyond cure.
    Who can understand it?

So okay, we have established that the heart of man is deceitful. We have seen that some day all the political structures and fancy buildings won’t matter anymore. So what is a Christ follower to do? How do you vote? How do you decide?

A few key steps

  1. Pray – Guys, I cannot stress this enough. As a follower of Christ you have to maintain your connection with Christ just as much as you need to maintain your connection to a water source so you don’t dehydrate. No human will have the wisdom that He can provide.
  2. Listen – As we saw earlier in Romans 12:1-2, God will give you the ability to test and approve His good, pleasing and perfect will. See, God uses each of us to grow His kingdom here on earth in his own way. Sometimes it might be very obvious how He does it, but other times not so much. It may be revealed to you years down the road how one small action changed someone life and they went on to do amazing things for the kingdom. Who knows what God has planned for tomorrow. Matthew 6:34 “34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
  3. Love like Jesus – If our actions towards others are filtered through the way of living that Jesus had while on earth, then we will be persecuted. Weren’t expecting that, were you? Just as a reminder, Jesus died on a cross for a crime He did not commit because the Jewish people said they wanted a murderer set free in stead of Him. So like I said, love like Jesus did. It will hurt sometimes. You will be looked at differently because your views are, “radical”. Jesus views were radical, they changed the entire world. The love that Jesus showed us through his sacrifice for ALL of us though is the example of dying to oneself so that God may work through us for His good, pleasing and perfect will.

I am not going to tell you how to use your legally given right to cast your vote. I do not have the wisdom that God has on that matter. What I will tell you though is if you sit quietly, fold your hands and do nothing, you are being disobedient. Check out Proverbs 6:1-19.

My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor,
    if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,
you have been trapped by what you said,
    ensnared by the words of your mouth.
So do this, my son, to free yourself,
    since you have fallen into your neighbor’s hands:
Go—to the point of exhaustion—[a]
    and give your neighbor no rest!
Allow no sleep to your eyes,
    no slumber to your eyelids.
Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
    like a bird from the snare of the fowler.

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
    consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
    no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
    and gathers its food at harvest.

How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
    When will you get up from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
    a little folding of the hands to rest—
11 and poverty will come on you like a thief
    and scarcity like an armed man.

12 A troublemaker and a villain,
    who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
13     who winks maliciously with his eye,
    signals with his feet
    and motions with his fingers,
14     who plots evil with deceit in his heart—
    he always stirs up conflict.
15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant;
    he will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.

16 There are six things the Lord hates,
    seven that are detestable to him:
17         haughty eyes,
        a lying tongue,
        hands that shed innocent blood,
18         a heart that devises wicked schemes,
        feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19         a false witness who pours out lies
        and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

If that wasn’t enough, Matthew 28:18-20 should be a great reminder for you.

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
